Lesson 2: Examples of effective segmentation strategies

Now that you know why segmentation is important, let’s explore some practical ways to implement it. These strategies are easy to start with and deliver big results:

By behavior: Segment based on how subscribers interact with your emails or site. Example: If someone clicks on a product link, follow up with more details or an exclusive discount.

By engagement level: Identify your super fans versus those who haven’t opened your emails in a while. Example: Reward your engaged audience with special offers and send re-engagement emails to inactive subscribers.

By interests: Ask your audience what they care about when they sign up. Example: A cooking blog could send vegetarian recipes to one group and BBQ tips to another.

By purchase history: Group customers based on what they’ve bought before. Example: If someone buys running shoes, send them an email about socks or fitness gear.

By lifecycle stage: Tailor emails based on where your subscribers are in their journey with you. Example: Welcome new subscribers with a series of tips, and upsell long-term customers with exclusive offers.
