Module 2: Setting Up the Foundation

Lesson 3: Setting up DNS records for deliverability.

Now that you have your domain registered and your autoresponder account set up, it’s time to configure your DNS records. These records ensure your emails are trusted by email providers and delivered to inboxes instead of spam folders. Don’t worry—we’ll keep it simple!

What Are DNS Records?

Think of DNS records as instructions that tell the internet how to handle your domain’s emails. The key records you’ll set up are:

SPF (Sender Policy Framework): Verifies which servers are allowed to send emails on your behalf.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): Adds a digital signature to your emails, proving they haven’t been tampered with.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance): Prevents unauthorized use of your domain by spammers.

Steps to Set Up DNS Records:

On Namecheap:

1. Log in to your Namecheap account and go to the Dashboard.

2. Find your domain and click Manage.

3. Navigate to the Advanced DNS tab.

Add the following records:

SPF: Add a TXT record with the value: v=spf1 include:your-email-provider.com ~all.

DKIM: Use the TXT record details provided by your autoresponder (e.g., GetResponse).

DMARC: Add a TXT record with the value: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:[email protected].

Save the changes and allow a few minutes for propagation.

On cPanel:

Log in to your cPanel account.

1. Go to the Zone Editor under the Domains section.

2. Select your domain and click Manage.

Add the following records:

SPF: Choose Add TXT Record and input the SPF value provided by your autoresponder.

DKIM: Use the key provided by your autoresponder service.

DMARC: Add a TXT record with this value: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:[email protected].

Save the changes and check your configuration using tools like MXToolbox.

Important Tips:

Your autoresponder (e.g., GetResponse) usually provides preconfigured DNS records. Simply copy and paste these values into your DNS settings.

Use tools like DMARCian to verify that your DNS records are set up correctly.

With these records in place, your emails will have a much better chance of reaching inboxes. Great job—you’re making big strides! Let’s move forward to the next step in your training.
