Lesson 2: Tools and steps to clean your email list
Cleaning your list isn’t as complicated as it sounds. Here’s how you can do it:
1. Use list cleaning tools:
There are several tools you can use to clean your list automatically:
NeverBounce
ZeroBounce
These tools identify invalid, fake, and unengaged email addresses and help you remove them from your list.
2. Identify unengaged subscribers:
It’s important to spot those who haven’t interacted with your emails in the last 2–4 months. It depends on how many emails you send to your list per day, per week or month.
Here’s how you can find non-openers in GetResponse and AWeber:
How to Find Non-Openers in GetResponse
a. Log in to your GetResponse account.
b. Go to Lists and select the list you want to clean.
c. Click on Search Contacts and choose Advanced Search.
d. Use the filter Message not opened and set the date range (e.g., last 60–120days).
e. Add an additional filter for Subscription date and set it to before 30 days to avoid removing recent subscribers.
f. Apply the filters to see all non-openers who have been on your list for at least 30 days.
g. Save this segment to take action later or directly send a re-engagement campaign or simply delete them. Your choice.
How to Find Non-Openers in AWeber
a. Log in to your AWeber account.
b. Navigate to Subscribers and choose Manage Subscribers.
c. Use the filter No Opens and specify a date range (e.g., last 60–120 days).
d. Add an additional filter for Date Added and set it to before 30 days to exclude newer subscribers.
e. Review the list of subscribers who haven’t opened your emails within the selected period and have been on your list for at least 30 days.
f. Save this segment or tag the contacts for follow-up or removal.
3. Send a re-engagement campaign:
Before you remove subscribers, try sending a re-engagement email to win them back.
Subject line: “Still interested? Let’s stay in touch!”
Body: Ask if they’d like to continue receiving your emails and provide a clear way to stay subscribed.
4. Remove unresponsive subscribers:
If they don’t respond to your re-engagement email, it’s time to say goodbye. Remove them from your list to keep it healthy.
Pro Tip:
Make list cleaning a regular habit—every 2 to 3 months. This keeps your list fresh, engaged, and ready for your offers.
By cleaning your list, you’ll boost your deliverability, engagement, and overall email marketing success. And trust me, your autoresponder bill will thank you too!
